Bringing together

The mission to eliminate podoconiosis is predicated on the power of collective action. At the core of our belief is that sustainable progress requires the integration of scientific expertise, governmental commitment, and the invaluable insights of those with lived experience.

This spirit of global cooperation was exemplified at the 2nd Podoconiosis Conference, held in Kigali, Rwanda, in January 2025.

A Multidisciplinary Assembly

Operating under the theme "From Neglect to Elimination with Country Ownership," the conference convened over 100 delegates from 14 countries. This event served as a critical platform for high-level dialogue between a diverse range of stakeholders, including:

National Health Authorities: Representatives from the WHO and the Rwanda Biomedical Centre.

Academic and Implementing Partners: 17 researchers presenting evidence-based best practices from five endemic countries.

Advocates with Lived Experience: Individuals whose testimonies ensured technical discussions remained centred on human dignity and patient outcomes.

Advancing the Global Agenda

The conference acted as a catalyst for measurable commitments aligned with the WHO NTD Roadmap. By bridging the gap between research and policy, we achieved several milestones:

National Commitments: Government representatives announced specific targets, reinforcing the necessity of sovereign responsibility in disease control.

Strategic Advocacy: Expert panels outlined a roadmap for formal WHO recognition, a vital step in securing the international priority required for total elimination.

Strength in Unity

The success of this gathering underscores the necessity of a unified approach. We extend our gratitude to our partners—including the IZUMI Foundation and Brighton and Sussex Medical School—for their role in this collaborative success. Together, we are ensuring the global community moves forward as one toward a podoconiosis-free future.
