Funding awarded for podoconiosis research

Researchers at Addis Ababa University, the Kilifi Clinical Trials Facility, the University of Sussex and Brighton & Sussex Medical School have been awarded funding to conduct a randomised controlled trial of podoconiosis lymphoedema management in northern Ethiopia.

The trial, funded by the UK Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and UKAID, will run over a three year period from early 2013, and will involve nearly 700 patients.

Principal Investigator, Dr Gail Davey, commented, "We're very pleased this trial was funded – it will help us build strong evidence for treatment of podoconiosis while developing the capacity to run big trials in Ethiopia. Potential implementers in other endemic countries have already expressed interest in the results."
